What is Glühwein? Popular at German Christmas markets, and holiday gatherings, this is a mulled wine, with a different twist. Glühwein is traditionally served at stalls at Christmas markets across Germany and Austria to keep people warm as they shop and socialize.
German Glühwein, literally translates to glow-wine, because of how you feel after you’ve been drinking it outside in December!
They KEY is to heat it gently!
Do not let the wine boil or you will boil off all of the alcohol! Heat gently for about 20 minutes before guests arrive.
Use a dry red wine wine like Chianti or Cabernet Sauvignon.
Experiment with spices.
Add cardamom, vanilla, ginger, or black pepper. In cold Nordic countries, they add blanched almonds and raisins to their gløgg!
Add a shot !
If you like, there’s the optional Schuss, or shot of hard liquor (rum or amaretto).
